Stress is defined as “the physical pressure, pull, or force exerted on one thing or another; strain.” (Dictionary.com 14/08/2009). The word stress originates from Latin stringere, meaning to draw taut and so the relation between current usage and the words origin are still clearly linked.
 What is stress today? In today’s society, we are all under one form of stress or another; being pulled in several directions in both your personal and work life can at times feel like a force that you just cannot contend with.
The actual term “stress” became commonly used by psychologists in the 1930’s. Initially it was a very specific term relating to research that Hans Selye undertook on a set of laboratory rats when placed with unpleasant stimuli.
The initial researched discussed the “stress” (the person or thing undergoing the stress) and the “stressor” who is the person or thing that is inflicting the stress onto the other.
What does stress look like? When a person undergoes stress, there are three main factors that have been tried and tested. They fall into these three stages: Alarm: this is the initial process that the body goes into. This happens as soon as the stress is identified. When the body realises the stress it is under, your body will cope by releasing adrenalin. This is basically the fight or flight syndrome and help you get through the initial stages.
Resistance: if the stressors continue, then the body needs to establish a way in which it can cope with the stress. The body will attempt to adapt to the situations, although this cannot be a long term solution and eventually, all of the body’s resources are depleted.
Exhaustion: as the body’s recourses are used, the body is now unable to continue with its normal activities. At this point, there may be some physical evidence of stresss in the form of raised heart rate, perspiration and shaking to name a few.
If this stage lasts a considerable duration, it can cause long term damage on the body as immune system is ravaged. This can result in illnesses such as; ulcers, depression and diabetes as well as the well associated cardiac issues stress has upon the human body.
The concept of stress and its adaptations offers an ability to understand issues within a person’s life and work them through in order to have a healthier, happier life; because of this and the potential of having a happier life, stressmanagment and the gaining the ability to identify a potentially stressful situations and deal with them accordingly.
Stress is seen now more as a metaphorical rather than literal, with the phrase “Stressed out” being a band aid for all of life’s minor problems. Due to the over usage of the term, many people now view stress as actual medical problem.
We all know that stress is a factor that we all have to deal with on a daily basis, and although some scorn the term stresss and find it difficult to empathize with those who are suffering from stress, it s a recognized illness and there are many ways to help tackle and manage your stress levels.
