How To Stay Poised Even When in an Embarrassing Situation

Being embarrassed in an awkward social situation is a major contributor to high stress levels, and the anxiety and stress about being in social situations often boil back to some embarrassing situation in a persons past.

Mortifying moments happen to anyone. You have to know how to get out of these sticky situations and still look cool and confident. You may think that people overreact whenever they’re caught in an embarrassing moment…that is, until it happens to you. And then you think that there is no blanket big enough to cover your humiliation.

Instead of wishing for the earth to just open up and swallow you whole, you still have ways to save face. For ridiculous moments, laugh genuinely and shrug it off. If anything, at least you made people smile, and this is without the expense of another human being. Keep your cool because you can’t make the situation better if you freak out.

Moreover, having someone criticize you harshly in front of the other people is always a tough thing to swallow. When it happens in the work environment, remember that it is also just work. Don’t take these comments personally because these don’t come from the people you love.

Realize that it’s part of the job. Either quit and find another line of work to do or take it and learn from the experience. Except in certain cases where the person seems to be evil incarnate or when everyone seems to step beyond their boundaries, know that most criticisms are meant to help your work improve, whether it’s said constructively or not.

Sometimes, these even have the potential to open your eyes and lead to an awesome idea. Shrug off the negative vibes, take the positive criticism, and use it to do better work the next time you’re reviewed.

Sometimes, intrinsic embarrassment happens to the best of us. Keep a positive mindset and know that though mistakes aren’t always forgotten, they can always be forgiven. Despite the best laid plans, sometimes life spins out of control.

These mistakes are what make life more interesting. Moments that aren’t necessarily according to plan can only make you a more unique, fascinating, and wiser person. Plus, a great person does not live to avoid these sorts of adventures. In love, work, and friendships, you should throw yourself in the deep because this can bring you big success as well.

Change your mind and your actions will soon follow. People will catch your vibe if you think you’re too shy. The trick is to start believing in yourself.

Believe that you are a person of substance so that nothing can ever rattle your nerves. Building confidence and altering self-perception definitely takes time and patience. After all, you can’t undo a lifetime’s worth of programming.

All these alterations to behavior must be parceled out gradually so that you ease into your new attitude. A good trick to change the way you see yourself is to have a personal mantra that you can say every morning before starting your day. Even the short and snappy sayings will do.

By repeating this affirmation, you’ll start acting, feeling, and thinking like your belief. Just as you are gracious about your mistakes, show other people that you are doing the same thing for them. You may even change their mindset when you extend the same kindness to them.
