How to Mix Business with Pleasure

Learn how to navigate your way to a night-out with colleagues. Drinking with your office mates is both a hazard and an opportunity to master the after-hours scenarios to climb the corporate ladder. Today’s world is fast changing, because your personal and business lives no longer have to be separated. In fact, when you establish friendships, you are more driven to go to work and perform as well as you can. If you happen to be a team leader, it helps to keep your troops happy. Pull your team together after disappointments, not just after successes. The more positively staffers view their rapport with the boss, the better their work attitudes become. Show them that while you can somehow keep your work and social life apart, you also can enjoy their company any time.

When it comes to work, the big bosses always try to organize events so that the people get to know each other. The goal is to create a social hub. When you find yourself in situations like these, avoid the sidelines as much as you can. The more central your social position as a group leader, the more you’ll be perceived as the type to take charge when it matters. Make eye contact and use strong gestures to radiate a sort of enthusiasm that people take to. However, try not to start all new friendships at just a party. You need to lay the groundwork a lot earlier because friendships at work improve job satisfaction.

When it’s time for a dinner out with important clients, try to cultivate loyalty and seize the chance to impress the people you’re with. Raise a glass to success, friendship, and the future. A client’s loyalty to you is more crucial than their loyalty to the company you represent. Revisit successes to rekindle spirits but try not to look as if you’re working too hard. A night out at an extremely expensive restaurant could also make them think that they end up paying for it somehow and in one way or another. When having drinks out with a potential client, your goal is to set up a sweet deal, one that everyone could be happy with. You’re developing a relationship at this point, so take this as a moment to stress on your team’s unique abilities. Avoid overzealous sales talk at all costs. One of your primary goals, after all, is to get a follow-up meeting. Never talk negatively about competition because this can put your potential client on edge. Plus, he could actually have connections with the other team. A put-down will only be viewed as a shot at his judgment.

If you’re a member of the staff, your goal would be different this time. You want a chance at promotion. So, ditch the shop talk and explore outside interests instead. Workers who trust their bosses have better ratings for assertiveness, creativity, risk-taking, motivation, and initiative. Know when to end things and avoid dragging topics to the next day. Just be confident about what happened the night before and go back to work as you continue to earn a spot as the protégée.
